OPENING NIGHT - Racing Dreams

Racing Dreams takes viewers into the lives of three young Extreme Kart Racers as they compete for the World Karting Association’s National Championship. Annabeth, 11, Josh, 12, and Brandon, 13, race their way through the year-long Championship series while simultaneously navigating the treacherous road between childhood and young adulthood.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Marshall Curry (Street Fight), this exciting, touching film won Best Documentary at its premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. The L.A. Times called Racing Dreams “the best movie of the year” and said “Make no mistake: this one is an instant classic.”

CLOSING NIGHT - Precious

The story of Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, a semi-literate and obese African-American girl who gradually confronts the numerous disadvantages that she encounters daily at home and in public. After transferring to an alternative school that prepares students for the G.E.D., Precious discovers a new source of support from an idealistic teacher, and she begins to resist her poisonously angry mother and forge a new life. Presented by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Precious, which Variety called “a film to be loved,” won the Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award, and Acting Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and the film will be the centerpiece showing for the 2009 New York Film Festival on October 3.
